ARC Review + Playlist: Where the Road Leads Us by Robin Reul (Blog Tour + Giveaway)

I’m so honored to be hosting a spot on the blog tour for Where the Road Leads Us by Robin Reul (more like I jumped up and down for a solid 10 minutes when I got the confirmation email) and I’ll be reviewing it and also sharing a playlist I made since this is a creative tour after all! That’s definitely because whenever I think of a road trip, the first thing that comes into my mind is music! And just a. couple days ago I made a road trip playlist for myself and I had to tweak it to match the book but I think it’s the perfect road trip playlist now and something you can listen to while reading this amazing book. This tour was hosted by MTMC Tours.

Where the Road Leads Us

Author: Robin Reul

Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary

Publishing Date: April 6, 2021

Sometimes the best path is the unexpected one.

Jack is on the verge for leaving for college, but before he does, he wants to track down his estranged brother, Alex and find some closure in the wake of their father’s death. Meanwhile, Hallie has just found out some upsetting news about a friend in Oregon, and she has a small window to go see him before it’s too late.

Jack and Hallie are practically strangers. They shared a class together years ago and haven’t seen each other since, though they have more in common than they’d ever imagine. And when fate puts them into the same ride share to the bus terminal, it kicks off an unconventional and hilarious adventure that may lead them to their own true selves…and maybe to each other.

“Sometimes the best plan is having no plan.”

I think Where the Road Leads Us was the perfect contemporary, find-yourself YA novel. Both Hallie and Jack are at a point in life where everything seems uncertain in a way, they both have decisions to make that could in a way pave out the rest of their life for them. One night, something just pushes them to take a jump and they do and so begins this wonderful road trip.

Jack recently lost his dad, his mom isn’t very involved in his life but has already decided the future for him and he has an estranged brother. When he goes to his dad’s study one day and finds something, it motivates him to take a leap and sought out his brother. Hallie’s running out of time to meet a friend and would do anything to get there in time. Both of them end up on the same ride to catch their bus, by a kick of fate.

While the book had its serious moments that REALLY make you think, there’s also some funny and hilarious moments that make you wish you were on this road trip with them too. There was a little bit of romance in the book and while romance is my thing and I need every book I read to have it, I’m so glad this book didn’t focus on that aspect. Both Jack and Hallie have been through so many things in life, they don’t need an additional and instant “I liked you the moment I saw you” kind of relationship which happens so often. Throughout the course of the trip, they form a bond with each other and slowly develop.

The writing was so good. I think the author’s writing style really impacts whether I like a book or enjoy it and I think I already loved the storyline and the writing just appealed to it even more. I loved the scenarios Robin wrote and the characters too. I loved Jack and Hallie both so much as people. And not in the way I usually like all the male characters in a book, in the “I wish I had a fictional boyfriend like him” kind of way but more of the way that I loved his personality, he was quirky, basically a human google and so fun to be around and Hallie was so nice and caring for the people she loved. (I mean she travelled states to see a friend before she ran out of time to.)

Spotify Playlist

I’ve never actually been on a road trip but I’ve imagined what it would be like in many of my day dreams and so a while back I created a playlist in case this fictional road trip ever actually happened since I’m a musician and music is such a big part of my life. I edited a lot of the songs and added different ones that I thought would capture the vibe of the book and a road trip, together. The playlist of course has my music taste shown in it and I really hope you like it!

About the Author

The author of MY KIND OF CRAZY and the forthcoming WHERE THE ROAD LEADS US, Robin Reul has been writing since she was in early elementary school, when she used to make her own book club flyers for her classmates and then pen them original stories. Though she grew up on movie sets and worked for many years in the film and television industry both as an actress and in motion picture development, she ultimately decided to focus her attention on writing young adult novels. Inspired by novelists like John Green and Sarah Dessen and screenwriters like John Hughes and Richard Linklater, she loves to write stories that straddle the line between humor and heartbreak, filled with quirky, memorable characters who stay with the reader long after the story ends. When she’s not writing, Robin can be found drinking copious amounts of iced coffee and listening to way too much 80’s music. She lives in Los Angeles suburbia.
